Julie is a graduate school trained conservator with almost 30 years of professional experience. She is a Professional Associate of the American Institute of Conservation (AIC). As a conservator specializing in works of art on paper she has experience with prints, drawings, watercolors, ukiyoe, thangkas, ephemera, documents and 3-D paper objects. All treatments involve written and photographic documentation in accordance with the AIC code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice.
The majority of conservator's have in their resume hands-on training, which can occur through pre-program positions, internships and fellowship at museums or private studios under the direction of trained conservators before, during an after earning their Master's degree. While restoration is an aspect of a conservator's job, a qualified conservator will approach treatment with long-term preservation as the main goal. While aiming to preserve the original object without compromising its materials, artistic and historic integrity, the conservator will use, as much as possible, reversible materials that will not further degrade or damage the object in the short or long term. Restorers, a large part, aim on returning an object to its original aesthetic by whatever means necessary. This can be to the detriment of the artwork as new materials may not be compatible with the long-term stability of the object.
